JULES-Peat

JULES, the land surface component of UKESM, the UK's Earth System Model.

JULES is a Land Surface Model. It is the land surface component of UKESM, the UK's Earth System Model, which is used to understand the future impacts of climate change on the global scale. Through the work of Sarah Chadburn, JULES has recently gained the ability to model the accumulation of peat, as well as how soil properties change as peat decomposes. However, there’s still much more to do. Over the course of the project we will be developing JULES to include peatland-specific vegetation such as moss, developing methods to situate peatlands within the hydrology of the wider landscape using learnings from DigiBog, and testing whether JULES can accurately reproduce observations from our sites across the UK and Europe. Ultimately, the aim is to be able to use JULES to estimate what the future effects of climate change on peatlands might be, and to help us develop the best strategies for managing and restoring peatlands.
